Maya Rathore’s success story began when she got a microloan to buy her own sewing machine and start a business. Her ‘kirana’ store, set up in a small town in India, is the size of a parking spot but offers everything from clothing to cosmetics and even diapers.
Rathore lives across the street from Jyoti Verma, who’s also a seamstress and received her first microloan some five years ago. She goes door-to-door selling shirts and sarees, each under $5, and makes about $400 monthly. Rathore earns double that, and they each pay a little more than $40 in monthly installments on their fourth microloan from Belstar, a nonbanking financing company in India.
